SWOON Quilted!

Ok … so it’s been a few days since my last post and I’m not sure when I’ll get time to sit and do a longer one… but I wanted to share a couple of pictures that Linh from LiMa Sews sent me of my quilted Swoon quilt.

Her husband (the Ma part of LiMa) took the pictures and I’m so glad I have them for my files.  They really show off the quilt pattern.

Swoon Quilted 1

I LOVE it!  The baptist fan pattern was a great choice and I’m so glad I took Linh’s advice on the selection.  Since I had it done, I have seen a lot of other quilts in blogland done in the pattern.  I’m finally in the midst of a popular trend instead of 2 years behind one!

Here’s a close up:

Swoon Quilted 2

I am binding the quilt in one of the dark navy prints from the collection:

Happy Go Lucky Navy Mum Yardage SKU# 55063-17

My plan is to bind it this weekend and give it to my friend on Monday.  Wish I had time now, but I have to close the books on July and that is taking up my spare time right now.  I might be able to get to it Thursday, but we’ll see.

Some sad news though… one of my little tuxedo kittens passed away this week.  Unexpectedly.  She seemed to be losing weight recently, and was really looking pitiful this past weekend, but before I could arrange a Dr. appointment – the kids found her ‘frozen’ in the living room Monday night.  She had a good appetite, so I’m not sure what happened.  I feel really awful about it.  The picture below is from Aug 4th, and she looks pretty good here.

Rest in peace Posy.  We loved you for a short time and will keep you in our hearts forever.

Good night all,

Quick Monday post

Just a short post to show the finished blocks from Month 2 of the Fat Quarter Shop Designer Mystery Block of the Month program for 2013.  Hahahaha… let’s just called it 2013 DM BOM from now on… done in the Avalon fabric collection from Fig Tree Quilts for Moda.

My two blocks laid out in the afternoon grass:

2013 DMBOM B2 Done

These colors are so cheerful!  Here’s a closeup of the bow area, which turned out so great, although I’m not sure why they didn’t write the pattern to eliminate those four extra small pieces at the top and bottom of the bow:

2013 DMBOM B2 Bow

Worked some more on my Rally quilt.  I need to just bite the bullet and finish chain piecing all the parts and then construct the blocks.  Otherwise, it feels as though it just drags on a bit with all those solid colors.  I’ve decided that I’m not a fan of solids-only quilt construction.  Not enough visual interest for me.  But I will fight through to get this one done!

Finally – a good sunshine picture of the two twins, Rosy (on the right) and Posy.  They love to find the sunny spots in the house during the day.  You can sort of see Jewelry laying behind them:

Hope you are having a great start to your week!  Thanks for stopping by today!

10 Little Things – A FINISH!

I love the feeling of a completed quilt top, but it does not beat the feeling I have when I call a quilt finished.  For me, that means that someone can snuggle with it, wash it, use it, love it.  My 10 Little Things quilt is now bequeathed to Brandon’s grandmother (my friend at work) and will be given to him at a family birthday party tomorrow night.

Picture heavy post, but then again – that’s why I started this blog.  To record and reflect back on quilt projects for myself and anyone else who is interested.

The quilt pattern was adapted from a free Moda Bakeshop pattern called Jungle Path by Jessica Kelly who blogs at www.sewcraftyjess.blogspot.com.

Click on “JUNGLE PATH” to open a window to the Bakeshop recipe.

I loved the 10 Little Things collection and it came with a large panel in two colorways.  I especially liked the red, so I centered it for the quilt and put my Jungle Path blocks around it.

10LT Quilted No Binding

That panel wasn’t perfectly rectangular, so you can see a bit of the red edging fading in and out as you go around the panel.  The blocks fit really well around the outside, and I just had to improvise with those two extra strips in the center of the top and bottom.

This is how the quilts came back from LiMa Sews – all bundled in brown paper and a navy ribbon to tie it all up.  My SWOON quilt is folded on the bottom – later post for sure!!

10LT Packaged Ribbon

Browse some of the pictures… the pantograph that I selected was Stars and Loops.  It worked out really well and was perfect for a little boy!

10LT Quilted 2 10LT Quilted No Binding 2 10LT Quilted 1 10LT Quilted 3 10LT Quilted 4

I really love the backing – these owls are the cutest!  When I went to select my backing – it turned out the size of my quilt top was just past the width of fabric – around 46″.  So… since I still had a variety of jelly roll strips leftover, I put them to good use in a piano key border on the backside.  Once it was quilted and bound, it turned out looking like a perfect chain of squares.

10LT Front and Back 10LT Quilted Back

Linh did a fantastic job quilting this and making sure the back was centered just right so as to make the strips come out even on both sides.

When I got the quilt back, I went looking for my extra yardage and scraps of fabric from this project – and I could NOT find it for anything.  And I’m so impatient – I was ready to get the binding on and give it away.  Luckily – I had just purchased a yard of the yellow grunge solid from the BOHO collection and it matched perfectly!!  I did the binding last night and machine stitched it completely – first on the front, then wrapped it to the back and did it again.  Turned out fine – I will probably do that more often on these smaller quilts.

10LT Binding

The final step was a quilt label.  I had come across a laser cut, fusible backed train design on eBay and had bought it many, many months ago in anticipation of this day.  However, due to my impatience, I decided to just fuse down the shapes and write out my message with a Sharpie.  I don’t like how it turned out necessarily, but at least it has a label on it.  Next time, I will work in the label before it gets quilted, or at least be ready to take the time to embroider it.  This one just looks, well. ,… like I rushed it (which I did).  I just hope it stands up to washing regularly.

10LT Train Label 10LT Label Closeup

That’s it for today!

Last night I finished my two basket blocks for the 2013 Fat Quarter Shop Designer Mystery BOM.  They came out great also – later post on that.

This weekend I hope to get the binding on the Swoon quilt and deliver it to my friend on Monday.

Next week – I really have to finish up my Rally quilt before that kid flies off to college in Callifornia.

Finally, the Lincoln quilt is going to be a baby quilt gift, which needs to get done this month as well.

Thanks for visiting today and making it to the end of my post!  Have a great weekend!

Kitten (and one Mommy cat) update

Here’s some pictures of the growing kittens as of this morning!  Enjoy!

First name Dosy, but recently renamed to Diamond

Mommy and Two 073113

Mommy cat (Glowy because of her golden eyes) and the twins. She’s ready to run if I move too fast!
She’s beautiful though!

We are going to adopt our first two kittens, Sparkle and Jewelry (see a theme with the names?).  Waiting on these others to get bigger, vetted and spayed and hopefully adopted out as kittens.  Not sure what to do with Mommy yet…  Keep her?  Return her to her original neighborhood?  She will miss her babies I think.  I think we have too many cats, and I never thought I would think that.  Maybe I just need more litter boxes (they all stay inside).

Have a great day!  Thanks for visiting!

Get ready to sweat!

It is still July, and it is still Houston, TX.  Temperature today, with heat index, is close to 100 degrees.  I know it is hotter in other places of the country, but it still makes me sweat when I go outside.

Now let’s add on a little bit of cotton!!

Today I am eagerly anticipating two of my quilts back from LiMa Sews!  My Swoon king size quilt in a baptist fan pattern and a generous sized toddler quilt for a good friend’s grandson who turns 1 year old this week.   The picture below shows the pieced backing that I did and the back side of the quilt top.  Aren’t those owls cute??

10 Little Things Progress

Tonight, I plan to do the binding on the toddler quilt so I can wrap it all up and give it to my friend tomorrow in time for the birthday.  I actually had it pieced just before he was born, but then I sat on it and thought I would do it myself, but that never happened.  So, off it went to Linh over at LiMa Sews!  For some reason, I didn’t have any more pictures of this quilt before I sent it off for quilting.  I’ll give all the specifics about it on a later post, once I have the binding done and hopefully get a picture of the birthday boy with it!  The fabric is 10 Little Things by Jenn Ski.

So – what did I do last night, now that AYOS is done??  Block 2 of the FQS DM BOM of course!

As I did on the first block, I cut out double the pieces so as to make two blocks from the single kit.  I had to borrow a little bit of fabric from Block 1 leftovers.  This month, the block is a really cute basket.  The stack of fabrics under the rotary cutter are the leftovers from Block 2:

FQS 2013 B2 Cuttings

FQS 2013 B2 Cuttings 2

Here are the ‘scraps’ all laid out so you can really get a feel for how much fabric FQS includes in their kits – it’s incredible!  The kit is suppose to make ONE block.  I made TWO and I still had this much left over (no background left though):

FQS 2013 B2 Leftovers

I didn’t get it all pieced last night, but I stayed up as late as I could to give it a try!  Here’s the middle section of the blocks:

FQS 2013 B2 WIP 1

And here are the components for the rest of the block:

I can definitely get this knocked out before the weekend.

Hope you are being productive today!  Thanks so much for stopping by – comments are always welcome!

The start of a great week ahead!

I have a feeling this is going to be a great week.  My boss left today for a week long cruise and I completed my July AYOS!

I present to you… Lincoln!

Another AYOS Done! Lincoln!!

Another AYOS Done! Lincoln!!

Fabric is from the Boho collection by Urban Chiks for Moda.

Top finishes at just under 50″ square.

I’m thrilled with how this came out.  As I mentioned in an earlier email, I probably would not have ever purchased this fabric collection for myself – but I received two charm packs as part of my winnings from last month’s AYOS submission.  Once I got started with it, I truly enjoyed every minute working on this quilt.  I also decided that this would be a unique and beautiful baby girl quilt, so I added in the extra borders to maximize the size.

Here’s a picture of the two inserted 1 1/2″ finished inner white borders that vary from the small Lincoln pattern:

Lincoln Done 6

I happen to have some light/dark alternating pink polka dot flannel fabric that I am going to use for the backing – to make it extra soft for the baby.

I decided on a mitered outer border, which I usually don’t fool with – but I had long enough strips to give it a try.

Here’s my one perfect corner:

Lincoln Done 3

The other three corners ended up with a bit of a pucker in the seam – but not so bad as to want to rip out and do over (at least for me at the end stage of a quilt completion – although, maybe I just have to remove a few stitches from that corner…):

Lincoln Done 4

Here’s two more pictures on our side fence:

Lincoln Done 7 Lincoln Done 5

I’m so glad to have joined in this month.  However – depending on the pattern for August – I may have to take a break so I can get some other WIPs continued.  We will see on Thursday when the parade of quilts is made on Sinta and Sherri’s blogs!

Hope you have a great week ahead of you also.  Thank you so much for stopping by today!

Lincoln blocks audition

Lincoln blocks are done!  Now just previewing the placement of them all before I starting sewing them together.

AYOS Lincoln Blocks

Tried to fussy cut some of the more appropriate pieces.  I’ll be leaving this red flower one in the center:

AYOS Lincoln Blocks Closeup

I am very likely to add on a couple of borders, perhaps following the guidance of the instructions for the larger Lincoln setting in the book.  Part of me wants to add in a white inner border just before the outer ring of Rail Fence blocks.  I may have to browse other blogs to see what everyone else is doing with their AYOS this month.

I have only about two weeks left to finish my Rally quilt.  Cutting it close!  Better get moving!

Thanks for stopping by today,

Jennifer

I couldn’t stay away!

Well, even with my intent to stay focused on work this past week, I did get started with my AYOS project for July … LINCOLN Schnibble pattern by Miss Rosie’s Quilt Company.

I started with ordering the book, so I could add to my collection and get so many more great patterns at the same time.  I added in some Bella Solid “Feather” for the background out of my stash and my two charm packs of BOHO fabric by Urban Chiks, courtesy of Carrie Nelson herself from my prize package (see last post):

AYOS Lincoln Start

Now, mind you, I have my favorite designers and what I think are my favorite color schemes.  I had not purchased any of the BOHO collection because it didn’t seem ‘me’.  But I am so pleasantly surprised at how much I have enjoyed working with it!  Rich colors and the retro vibe feel is cheerful.  So, I started with my fabric selections for the 13 star points and centers.  Now tell me – don’t these colors look great??

AYOS Lincoln Star Points

I proceeded to cut up my squares for the star points and got them all grouped together with their centers.  You can also see the start of the rail fence pieces beginning to stack up on the right:

AYOS Lincoln Star Sets

And the first block done and approved!  I love how the star floats in the background (there is more than 1/4″ seam allowance designed into that block), and even though I think it came out perfectly – it does help to have that cushion where you won’t cut off the points when you join everything together.  This picture below came out a bit dark.  It is a great block – unfinished at 5″ square:

AYOS Lincoln Block 1

As of today, I have my rail fence block 2/3 joined (two of the three strips are connected).  This will be so speedy!  I have a total of 4 star blocks done, so only 9 more to go.  I ordered my backing and binding from FQS yesterday, so it should be here by the weekend and maybe I can even get this quilted on my own machine before the end of the month!  Yippee!

Once that is done … look what I get to do next:

2013 FQS DM BOM 2

See you soon!

Thanks for visiting my site!

Winning streak!

I have been following quilt blogs for a little over a year now.  I was stunned at how many there were and all the variations in style and tastes.  It has been a great hobby (?) or favorite activity to pop in every day or two to see what’s new.  And then there are the contests and giveaways!  This group is amazing in their endeavor to attract new followers and/or to just share in their love of quilting and reaching out to others of like mind.

Long intro to the fact that up until this past month, I have never won any of these contests, but I always enjoy the comments and blog posts that go along with them.  I don’t expect to win, but I join every now and then.

I hit the jackpot twice this past month!  I’m thrilled and it is just icing on the cake.

The first one was on a wonderful and beautiful blog by a quilter in Australia named Meredithe Clark.  She designs her own templates and patterns and has the blog Pomegranate and Chintz.  Check her out – you will love her pictures and she does a lot of quilting groups, and they eat very well I might add.  Usually beautiful food pics to go with their progress pictures.

The second one that I won was a drawing as a participant in the June AYOS sew along, hosted by Sherri and Sinta.  Two great bloggers and I would not hesitate to assume, wonderful people.  However, my prize was sponsored by Carrie Nelson herself!  She is owned by her beautiful dog, Miss Rosie, of Miss Rosie’s Quilt Co.  I feel like I have been touched by a celebrity!

Well, I got both packages this past week and can’t be happier.  I won a set of acrylic templates designed by Meredithe which I love!  (I love templates, they definitely fit my collection obsession).

B2B Template Pack

B2B Templates

Carrie Nelson sent over a great bundle of precuts.  I am pleasantly surprised that I received two BOHO charm packs as part of this package and have decided to honor the gift by using them in my July AYOS quilt, Lincoln.  I have already cut out my fabric, so more pictures on that progress early in the week.  I had also ordered the book “Another Bite of Schnibbles” so I could get the Lincoln pattern and there are so, so many more in the book that I plan to make.  (note … I could have sworn I already owned this book, but after dedicating at least two hours searching for it – I resigned myself to the fact that I did not, in fact, own this book.  But I have at least three others by Carrie Nelson – so that may explain the feeling).

ABS Book

AYOS Lincoln Start

Someday, I may have enough followers to offer giveaways and contests.  But until then, I enjoy seeing this community grow and share graciously – and glad that I found them.  And just in case I never win anything again, I have signed up for waaayyyy too many upcoming BOM patterns later in the fall.  A lot of great ones coming out this year, so it will keep me in touch with my postman!

Thanks for stopping by!

Enter ‘Crazy’ week

I wish I had a lot of quilty topics and pictures to blog about today, but instead just a quick note that I may be AWOL for about a week at least.  Work is crazy this month and those kittens do need extra love at night, so I haven’t been sewing as much.  Luckily, my favorite ice cream is on sale right now and I picked up several varieties to enjoy with the family during this hot summer month.  If you don’t get Blue Bell ice cream where you are, I’m really sorry.  You can order it and have it shipped in dry ice ($129 for four half gallons anywhere in the US!).  During my time in the Carolinas, before Blue Bell got to that region, I did that once and it was sooooo good!

My favorite:  Cookies ‘n Cream

My husband’s favorite:  Chocolate Chip

My mother’s favorite:  Natural Vanilla Bean

My kid’s favorite:  Homemade Vanilla

If you go to their website and create a user account, you can view upcoming flavors and even download $1 off coupons every now and then (like I just did!).

www.bluebell.com

Truly is the ‘best ice cream in the country’.

So – back to work.  Fun next week.

Hope you have more time at the machine than I will!
