Back in Rehab … the best part of my day!

So… these past few days were not as productive as I had wanted.  I picked up the crud bug from my kids and it took me down harder than them.  I am finally feeling back to myself, mostly, but I think the medicine is making me drowsy.  Only two more days to go on that.

The kitchen project is moving   s  l   o   w   l   y.  I think someone is showing up today … not to actually do any work yet, but to test the kitchen for lead paint.  Why?  It’s being repainted anyway and why couldn’t they do that last week?  !@#$!@#$  I’m tired of being without a kitchen.  We took the doors off the refrigerator this morning and moved it from the kitchen to the dining room, so they would be able to get the new floor down without delay.  This is at least an improvement, since before we had the refrigerator in the garage with the good food and the one in the kitchen was kind of roped off.

The best part of the weekend was getting back to my Away From Home BOM.  I’ve got two tall trees to applique, and they will definitely take awhile.  Look below for the picture from the cover of the book which contains the pattern set:

AFH Cover Pic

This is just the center ‘story scape’ block that will be the center of the 100×100 quilt.  Once I get past the trees, I will be given an applique break and I will complete 20 spool blocks (see just below the picture).  I’m looking forward to some piecing with this project and fabric.  I haven’t had a chance to do that yet.

Here’s how far I got with the tree on the right.  The grass and tree trunk is done, but the leaves are just glued in place for the moment as I finish them (20 leaves on each tree).

AFH Block 1 WIP

Oh my gosh, these pics are bad.  I just don’t have good lighting in this room.  I’ll have to take my blocks outside for future pictures.

Here’s the full progress of the AFH BOM:

AFH Block 1-3 WIP

The background fabric appears lighter on my new block (with the tree) than the blocks I’ve had up there for some time.  Maybe a lot of pressing darkens it up and as I finish my trees, it will all come together.

I also stumbled upon a few pre-cuts of the new AVALON fabric collection by Fig Tree Quilts this weekend on eBay.

(Picture from Fig Tree’s blog, see link above)

Even though I’m not ready to start another project, I couldn’t help but purchase a charm pack and jelly roll – just because I can.  Months earlier than FQS will get them.  I like to have the fabric in my hand to consider as I look at patterns and books and those charm packs are just perfect for sampling.  Oh, and I perhaps got a little sample of Paint Box by Laundry Basket quilts as well… 🙂

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend – see you tomorrow!

Number crunching done, let the Fabric Fly!

For the past two and a half years, there has been one Wednesday every month which ALWAYS feels like a Friday.  I know it’s coming, I plan for it, my job is scheduled around it, so it’s no surprise.  But when it comes – I know that for at least a few seconds I will think it is Friday.  That Wednesday is today.  I have finished closing the accounts for another month and submitted it to the higher authorities.  I am an accounting manager by day and a mother, wife and quilter by night/weekends/lunch breaks.  I truly love working with numbers and it does fit me perfectly, but the sense of relief to get through the close is always a good cause for celebration.  So,… I will treat myself to extra quilting time tonight!

I have stuck with my goal so far this year to do some quilting every day.  Last night, I finished up my alternate Block 1 for the Blogger Girls BOM.  My husband graciously snapped a picture for me from home this morning since I forgot to take one last night.  What do you think?

BG BOM Blocks1

My husband said … “Those don’t go together, do they?”  The blue and greens are throwing him off.  I’ll have to evaluate how they mix together as I go along.  Perhaps it will end up being a reversible quilt?  I actually think they look good and I’m sure they will be fine altogether in the quilt top.  Reminder… these two blocks are made from the same pattern, just different fabrics.  The idea is to mix them all in the same quilt so it appears that you have all unique blocks.  Done!

Tonight…  I work on Block #3 of my Away from Home BOM, which are two panels that will be all applique.  Two oak trees with lots of leaves.  I kind of miss my applique time – so really looking forward to it!

I have to go now and show my CEO what pretty numbers I have made this month!

All the best,

Jennifer

It’s not one thing … it’s another!

Short post today.

Good news for quilting – I got my first block sewn together yesterday for Blogger Girls BOM.  Here is it on my design wall.  Ignore the background fabric beside it – goes to something else…  Picture is blurry, sorry.  Points came out great.  First time using the Fit to Be Geese ruler by Open Gate Quilts.  It worked just as promised and there’s less waste to this method than my rectangle with two squares method.  Perfect points and seam allowances.  However, it looks like I will be cutting off some of the points when I add it into sashing – when I trimmed it down to 12 1/2 inches, it took away more allowance than I would have wanted.   Don’t look too closely I guess.

BG Block 1 Done

I’m trying to close out December and the year today and tomorrow at work, so late nights.  However – after joining hundreds of other germ factories at the local Children’s Museum this weekend – my daughter caught a bug and ran a fever with sore throat last night.  She’s still asleep this morning (at 10:30 am).  Husband just sent a text message that son is also having odd symptoms.  SO… if it isn’t one thing, it will always be another.  Got to go and try to speed through my work, so I can go do some good cuddle time with the babies.

Go Texans!!

Just about an hour to see if the Houston Texans will show up and play the ball that they are capable of against the Patriots.  IF they can win today, they stand a good chance of beating Baltimore to make it to the Super Bowl.  Those Patriots are tough though…

But a sure thing is the fact that Fat Quarter Shop got in their yardage of La Belle Fleur this weekend, so my order is placed already and I should be back in business by Tuesday afternoon (I live fairly close to their business here in Texas, so even if I order ground delivery – I usually get it in 24 hours because they ship same day for orders before 3:00 pm CST 🙂  Lucky me!!).

My husband and I packed up our things this morning and moved our family back home today.  I have no idea how long we will be without most of our kitchen and our laundry appliances, but it will be so nice to be in our own beds and have all of our familiar things around us.  Not to mention my sewing machine.  I was getting stash withdrawal!

I obtained (stole) this ecard picture from Karen Style’s blog last week.  I feel that I am on the edge of this reality.   Some of these ecards are really, really funny.  One of my favorite things to browse for in Facebook.

See everyone tomorrow!

Blogger Girl’s Alternate Block 1 – mostly cut

It’s amazing what you can accomplish when you are removed from your home and don’t have all the normal distractions like cable TV with Netflix and pay-per-view, along with a handy washer/dryer and a couple of thousand square feet to (think about) cleaning.  I moved on to the Alternate Block 1 for Blogger Girl’s BOM.  After selecting the fabrics which I thought would make a significant difference in the resulting block, I cut back into new fat 8th pieces.  Turns out, I was just shy of being able to get my main background pieces out of what I had leftover from my first block.  This will drive me nuts, especially since I can’t buy yardage in this collection until later this month.  I just need a few more 3 inch blocks!!  Dang it!

Well, here’s the dry fit layout.  Of course, until I do sew some of these pieces together, I can’t really demonstrate how awesome it is :).  Try to imagine!  And the colors in this picture are pretty bad since I’m working at night, under flourescent overhead lights.

And here’s the original Block 1 again:

They will look decidedly different when they are all done and the colors are so much more wonderful that you can see in these pics.

Home news update – they now tell us that we can come back after Monday.  Still disinfecting everything, etc…  Demolition appears to be done.  Not sure when the building will start.  Most of the floor is removed down to the lowest layer, which looks like some kind of tar paper was used for adhesive?  The house is really, really old – so who knows what they are cleaning up now.

Have a wonderful, quilt filled weekend!

Dry Fit and Ready to get HOME!

I have stopped short of bringing my machine to the hotel room, but I did collect a few rulers, my mat, rotary cutter, sewing scissors, pencil and newly arrived box from FQS last night.  Inside the box was my Fat 8th bundle of La Belle Fleur.  I normally perch my new bundles on my cutting table and stare at them for a few weeks at least … but I don’t have time for that nonsense now.  This is probably the hardest part:

Moda Tape LaBelleFleur

Taking off that perfectly tied and pressed twill tape from MODA.  **sigh**  However, that almost ensures I will get started on this project and make it to the end.  I have a tough time cutting into my new fabric – but I have jumped that hurdle already.

Since I don’t have my machine with me, I at least cut out the pieces needed for the first block of the Blogger Girl’s BOM.  I still need to cut the pieces for the alternate block (same pattern, different fabrics/values in the positions).  Will plan to do that tonight.  Here’s my first block – dry fit for display:

BG Block 1 Dry Fit

I LOVE the French General colors!  And this collection has the perfect background fabric for the project.  I will need to order about 4 more yards of it to cover all the blocks and sashing, so I partially decided on this collection because of this background.  The only thing I might, MIGHT, add is some fabric that has black in it.  It would really add some interest I think. We’ll see.  Maybe in the corner stones of the sashing units.  I can probably find a French General fabric that would fit that bill.

Here are the fabric selections I haven’t used yet.

Fat 8 Spread LaBelleFleur

Definitely pulling in some of those blues into this next block.  Maybe every block will have red, and alternatively switch between green and blue.  I’ll try a few and see how they mesh together.

Hopeful that we will be moved back home tomorrow.  They tore up the kitchen floor today, finishing up the demo.  Although I would rather wait until I can cook at home before we go back – I’m getting really homesick…

Have a great Thursday!!

One lone yo-yo …

I finished all of my yo-yos last night!  Problem is, now I have to find a new traveling project for our temporary stay in the hotel.  When all were done, I counted them out.  199!  !@#%$!@9??  Ok… there is some lone yo-yo laying around somewhere, probably under my sewing table.  I will NOT be able to move on with this odd number.  It just isn’t in my DNA.  I’ll be on a hunt for that lone yo-yo.

Here’s what 199 yo-yos look like though.  Beautiful array of Tapestry fabric by Fig Tree Quilts.  Sorry about the poor lighting – I don’t get great lighting, even in the day time, inside the hotel room.

199 YoYos 2

I made each one using the large Clover yo-yo maker.  I finished them off by pulling the needle to the back and taking several overlapping small stitches.  I love how the dark plum color really pops in this group!

199 YoYos

I also got a sweet surprise in my mail yesterday!  My first bundle of Robin’s Nest fabric from Homestead Hearth!  They are doing this quilt as a BOM in reproduction type fabrics, not all from one collection – so it will be kind of scrappy too.  The burgundy gingham/check is their paper sack – in case that isn’t obvious in the picture.  I ordered the templates and patterns from Somerset Patchword in Australia, and was able to find the fabric BOM program here (afterwards noticing that they had both the fabric and patterns as a BOM option).  Take a look at both of their websites – lots of great eye candy.  Don’t be afraid to order from Australia either – they were so great to work with and if you can just wait for the shipping time, why not?  (Tip – use Skype to call super cheap internationally.  My 15 minute call to Somerset Patchwork cost me only 24 cents).  Can’t wait to get started on this one!

Robins Nest Block 1 Fabric

I think I’ll bring my tools and La Belle Fleur fabric back to the hotel and do some cutting for the  Blogger Girl’s BOM.  We should be back home tomorrow or Friday at the latest, so I can just get the sewing done this weekend.  Looking up!  AFTER I find that lone yo-yo…

All the best,

Jennifer

Pardon the Interruption

Well, frick.  I’m all so motivated to work on my quilty projects but our house had other plans.  Long story short…  noticed smell under kitchen counter when we came back from Christmas… noticed water collecting under sink the next day … smell increasing to near death experience.  Called plumber and landlord, who then called insurance company and carpenters, and finally a few days stay in a Residence Inn while they did this to the back wall of our kitchen:

Houston-20130108-00175

Houston-20130108-00172

Houston-20130108-00173

Houston-20130108-00174

There is actually standing water in that excavated area.  What you don’t see are all the bottom cabinets and the relocated appliances and sink.  What you do see is gray water, muck, dirt, rotten plywood and exposed concrete slab.  The plumbing has since been fixed, but now we get to reconstruct the kitchen after they pull up the rest of the floor to investigate the extent of the water damage under the linoleum.  The house is 70 years old, but the kitchen was redone not all that long ago.  Our renter’s coverage is taking care of moving out all of our kitchen items, having them disinfected and washed and the appliances relocated.  No tellin’ what’s airborne at this point in that room.  They even sealed it off with those contamination plastic flaps.  So, we will likely be back in the house tomorrow or the next day (provided that the smell is finally gone) and eating from McDonalds for a week while they do the work.

Punchline of this is I haven’t been able to work on as MUCH of my quilty stuff, but I am finishing up those yo-yos.  My handy portable project.  When I get back in the groove at home again, I will be able to start on Block 3 of my Away From Home BOM (Trees), Blogger Girls BOM (decided on La Belle Fleur), and Robin’s Nest (see this post from earlier).

I’m not really complaining too much about the kitchen.  Given the damage the water could have done, it isn’t that bad (and we rent instead of own, so the cost is on the landlord).  Compared to someone who has to live through rebuilding after hurricane damage, this will pass soon enough.

Chat again soon!

New BOM Sew Along!

I’m excited that I have decided to join this free BOM program that will be done online with a group of really great blog masters.  It is being hosted by Monique Dillard of Open Gate Quilts and can be made in several different dimensions.

Blogger Girls BOM

Blogger Girls BOM

Each month, starting January 1st of this year, Monique will release the pattern for another block.  If you want the larger, 12 block setting, the idea is to make two of these blocks – but change up the fabric and color values such that you can’t really tell they are made from the same pattern.  Click on Open Gate’s blog link and look over the great examples already posted by the bloggers.

As I said, I’ve decided to jump on in – but trying to choose between two fabric collections for it (pictures taken from FQS website)…

Either Strawberries, Blueberries and Chocolate by Judie Rothermel:

OR… Le Belle Fleur by French General:

La Belle Fleur

La Belle Fleur

I think I’m leaning towards La Belle Fleur and I will save my SBC fabric for the Pam Buda patchwork sew along which started last week as well (I’ll write more on that one later).

I made 12 more yo-yos yesterday for my daily goal, and I have about 24 more to make.  I’ll wrap those up tonight and get started on these new sew along projects by the weekend!

So Far, So Good

My lovely husband went out on a limb at Christmas and took some wild guesses at what I might like for my quilting hobby.  He’s been there to see the streams of packages arrive from FQS and eBay sellers, and has witnessed my late night sewing sessions this past year as I really got back into the love of quilting.

He did well.  He got me two boxes of the Clover Wonder Clips, a couple of jelly rolls, a Fons & Porter large hexagon template/ruler, and a package of Marti Mitchell templates.  Amazingly – I did not have any of the items he got me and I’m thrilled with all of them!

I was able to put to use the Wonder Clips last night.

Clover Wonder Clips

They worked really well for holding the binding strip in place as I attached it by machine.  I did like them better than the hair barette type clips that I have and the Wonder Clips just have a good weight and feel about them.  They are pricey, so I had never taken the plunge to invest in them before.  But that’s what Christmas gifts are good for – right?

In a prior post, I had said that I was making my grandmother a quilted shawl.  I thought I was going to use the Swoon pattern, but I changed my mind and went with Flower Girl instead (both by Camille Roskelley).  I was able to make the shawl in time, but I didn’t get the binding on before Christmas.  I am borrowing it back now to finish it up and will get it back to my grandmother this weekend, all done and ready to party!

Shawl Binding Prep 2

Shawl Binding Prep

Notice on the ends of the quilt, the two pockets.  They are very oversized, and I think I may whip stitch them closed a little to keep them from gaping open.  The intent is for my grandmother to wrap this around her shoulders and be able to keep remote, tissues, etc.. in the pockets while she’s watching TV in bed or her recliner.  I can also see this as a bed runner with handy pockets for the same purpose, as long as it is on a queen size bed.

This was the first time I had worked with flannel fabric and the minky backing.  The backing did fine, although I now want to try the Snuggles (?) fabric from Moda to see the difference.  The flannel fabric is not my favorite.  My piecing accuracy went waaaaay down on these blocks and luckily, they were large blocks so you can’t tell the flaws as easily.  I probably won’t do flannel again anytime soon, unless it is a whole piece for a backing.  I’m glad I tried it though!

So, I have still done something quilty each day this year and blogged about it.  So far, so good.

Have a great weekend!
