The longest Pep Rally ever!!

My Rah Rah Rally quilt top is done!  Except for one little edging row and a perhaps 2″ containment border in black that is.  And the quilting.  And the binding.  And the label.  #%!#$@#  I’m not even close to done…  It is done enough to show it off.

The quilt pattern was from the book, Sweet Celebrations with Moda Bakeshop Chefs: 35 Projects to Sew from Jelly Rolls, Layer Cakes, Fat Quarters, Charm Squares & More, by Lissa Alexander.

MAN!  That is a looooong title, right?

This particular project was created by Melissa Corry, of Happy Quilting.  She has a great blog and wonderful patterns.  You can click HERE to see my prior post.

But enough of the red tape… Here is my finish for the UCLA inspired Rally quilt:

Rally Top 2

I don’t have a fence high enough to display it the ‘right’ way, so I have it sideways for you.  Or you could turn your head.  Whatever.

Here are the colors from a general internet search for UCLA logos.  I saw all kinds of blue and gold colors, so I tried to pick ones that would be best together.  In hindsight, I could have used a more golden/darker yellow – but I’m good.  Really good.  Ready to start a new project.  I have determined through this process that I am not a big fan of working entirely with solids.  Not my thing – but I know others like it.  Enjoy!

Here’s  a close up of it, showing how I haven’t gotten it all ironed out yet:

And my darling model who is in desperate need of a haircut:

In Melissa’s version, she appliques the team logo onto the quilt front.  I don’t have all that kind of time or patience right at this moment, but since their mascot is a bear – I plan to cut out my quilt label in the shape of a bear paw print and use that on the back to help tie it into the school theme.

I hope the recipient enjoys it.  He leaves for UCLA next month.  I guess he could gift it back to his parents to have at their home to start their collection of collegiate items in support of their only child.  Either way would work for me.

Hope you are having a quilty day!  Thanks for stopping by!

Just add it to my tab…

Now THAT would be dangerous … to be able to run a tab at your favorite online or LQS stores.  I would have to go to work for them to get it paid off, and then live in a perpetual cycle.  Maybe not so bad, but likely would no longer have time to actually quilt anything.

I just can’t force myself to pass up certain patterns and this one has gotten my attention.  I already purchased it from FQS, and I have started collecting different cuts of green fabric for the stems and red/pink fabrics for the berries.  (photos taken from the Fat Quater Shop website)

Do you own this pattern yet?  I see several of them being mentioned in blogs.  I think when I make it, I will throw in one cherry block from the Cherry Pie quilt pattern by Fig Tree Quilts:

I had already started a collection of different reds, just in case I wanted to make a red & white quilt.  But THEN, I found the PERFECT background fabric last night while browsing FQS.  It is a new collection that just got uploaded to their site.  Already have my order in for 4 yards:

Berry Background

This is from the collection “Nice People Nice Things” by Helen Stubbings for Red Rooster Fabrics.  I’m not familiar with her, but I couldn’t pass up this print.

Now, I’m not just buying and hoarding – I do have a close finish.  I just have to attach 5 rows together and I’ll share my next finish (pending the quilting) with you in a day or two.

Cuteness alert!

Sparkle and Rosy

Sparkle looks HUGE cuddled next to Rosy.  We are working on a *ahem* skin condition for Rosy that is very treatable.  That’s why she has some hairless spots on her right now.

Thanks for stopping by as always!

SWOON Quilted!

Ok … so it’s been a few days since my last post and I’m not sure when I’ll get time to sit and do a longer one… but I wanted to share a couple of pictures that Linh from LiMa Sews sent me of my quilted Swoon quilt.

Her husband (the Ma part of LiMa) took the pictures and I’m so glad I have them for my files.  They really show off the quilt pattern.

Swoon Quilted 1

I LOVE it!  The baptist fan pattern was a great choice and I’m so glad I took Linh’s advice on the selection.  Since I had it done, I have seen a lot of other quilts in blogland done in the pattern.  I’m finally in the midst of a popular trend instead of 2 years behind one!

Here’s a close up:

Swoon Quilted 2

I am binding the quilt in one of the dark navy prints from the collection:

Happy Go Lucky Navy Mum Yardage SKU# 55063-17

My plan is to bind it this weekend and give it to my friend on Monday.  Wish I had time now, but I have to close the books on July and that is taking up my spare time right now.  I might be able to get to it Thursday, but we’ll see.

Some sad news though… one of my little tuxedo kittens passed away this week.  Unexpectedly.  She seemed to be losing weight recently, and was really looking pitiful this past weekend, but before I could arrange a Dr. appointment – the kids found her ‘frozen’ in the living room Monday night.  She had a good appetite, so I’m not sure what happened.  I feel really awful about it.  The picture below is from Aug 4th, and she looks pretty good here.

Rest in peace Posy.  We loved you for a short time and will keep you in our hearts forever.

Good night all,

Quick Monday post

Just a short post to show the finished blocks from Month 2 of the Fat Quarter Shop Designer Mystery Block of the Month program for 2013.  Hahahaha… let’s just called it 2013 DM BOM from now on… done in the Avalon fabric collection from Fig Tree Quilts for Moda.

My two blocks laid out in the afternoon grass:

2013 DMBOM B2 Done

These colors are so cheerful!  Here’s a closeup of the bow area, which turned out so great, although I’m not sure why they didn’t write the pattern to eliminate those four extra small pieces at the top and bottom of the bow:

Worked some more on my Rally quilt.  I need to just bite the bullet and finish chain piecing all the parts and then construct the blocks.  Otherwise, it feels as though it just drags on a bit with all those solid colors.  I’ve decided that I’m not a fan of solids-only quilt construction.  Not enough visual interest for me.  But I will fight through to get this one done!

Finally – a good sunshine picture of the two twins, Rosy (on the right) and Posy.  They love to find the sunny spots in the house during the day.  You can sort of see Jewelry laying behind them:

Hope you are having a great start to your week!  Thanks for stopping by today!

10 Little Things – A FINISH!

I love the feeling of a completed quilt top, but it does not beat the feeling I have when I call a quilt finished.  For me, that means that someone can snuggle with it, wash it, use it, love it.  My 10 Little Things quilt is now bequeathed to Brandon’s grandmother (my friend at work) and will be given to him at a family birthday party tomorrow night.

Picture heavy post, but then again – that’s why I started this blog.  To record and reflect back on quilt projects for myself and anyone else who is interested.

The quilt pattern was adapted from a free Moda Bakeshop pattern called Jungle Path by Jessica Kelly who blogs at www.sewcraftyjess.blogspot.com.

Click on “JUNGLE PATH” to open a window to the Bakeshop recipe.

I loved the 10 Little Things collection and it came with a large panel in two colorways.  I especially liked the red, so I centered it for the quilt and put my Jungle Path blocks around it.

That panel wasn’t perfectly rectangular, so you can see a bit of the red edging fading in and out as you go around the panel.  The blocks fit really well around the outside, and I just had to improvise with those two extra strips in the center of the top and bottom.

This is how the quilts came back from LiMa Sews – all bundled in brown paper and a navy ribbon to tie it all up.  My SWOON quilt is folded on the bottom – later post for sure!!

10LT Packaged Ribbon

Browse some of the pictures… the pantograph that I selected was Stars and Loops.  It worked out really well and was perfect for a little boy!

I really love the backing – these owls are the cutest!  When I went to select my backing – it turned out the size of my quilt top was just past the width of fabric – around 46″.  So… since I still had a variety of jelly roll strips leftover, I put them to good use in a piano key border on the backside.  Once it was quilted and bound, it turned out looking like a perfect chain of squares.

10LT Front and Back 10LT Quilted Back

Linh did a fantastic job quilting this and making sure the back was centered just right so as to make the strips come out even on both sides.

When I got the quilt back, I went looking for my extra yardage and scraps of fabric from this project – and I could NOT find it for anything.  And I’m so impatient – I was ready to get the binding on and give it away.  Luckily – I had just purchased a yard of the yellow grunge solid from the BOHO collection and it matched perfectly!!  I did the binding last night and machine stitched it completely – first on the front, then wrapped it to the back and did it again.  Turned out fine – I will probably do that more often on these smaller quilts.

10LT Binding

The final step was a quilt label.  I had come across a laser cut, fusible backed train design on eBay and had bought it many, many months ago in anticipation of this day.  However, due to my impatience, I decided to just fuse down the shapes and write out my message with a Sharpie.  I don’t like how it turned out necessarily, but at least it has a label on it.  Next time, I will work in the label before it gets quilted, or at least be ready to take the time to embroider it.  This one just looks, well. ,… like I rushed it (which I did).  I just hope it stands up to washing regularly.

That’s it for today!

Last night I finished my two basket blocks for the 2013 Fat Quarter Shop Designer Mystery BOM.  They came out great also – later post on that.

This weekend I hope to get the binding on the Swoon quilt and deliver it to my friend on Monday.

Next week – I really have to finish up my Rally quilt before that kid flies off to college in Callifornia.

Finally, the Lincoln quilt is going to be a baby quilt gift, which needs to get done this month as well.

Thanks for visiting today and making it to the end of my post!  Have a great weekend!
